Really, You Didn’t Realize This?
Remember when Trump was President and some Democratic Senators wanted to raise the gas tax because the gallon cost was so low and they saw a revenue opportunity? At the time we asked, what are you going to do when the price rises? Well, I was amused to see two Democratic Senators up for reelection, Mark Kelly (Ariz.) and Maggie Hassan’s (N.H.), suggesting a suspension of the $0.184 federal tax on gasoline because the price is too high.
Three questions for them:
Now wasn’t it, as we suggested, a dumb idea to raise the tax a year ago? How did you even think that was a good idea?
Why don’t you tell your leadership it might be a better idea to go back to the policies that made us energy independent? That seemed to work really well.
Third, you want to relieve people of eighteen cents per gallon. How about the other eighty-one cents a gallon extra they are paying? Any ideas?
Funny how in a reelection year they suddenly see things different.
Remember – your vote counts. Energy independence is one such issue.
Here’s another for the Democrats. It is from Axios this AM. You will shake your head reading the new enlightenment they have.
The hard-left politics of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and the so-called “Squad,” once a dominant theme for vast numbers of elected Democrats, is backfiring big-time on the party in power, top Democrats tell us.
Why it matters: The push to defund the police, rename schools and tear down statues has created a significant obstacle to Democrats keeping control of the House, the Senate and the party’s overall image.
“It’s what we’ve been screaming about for a year,” said Matt Bennett, co-founder of center-left Third Way, which launched Shield PAC to defend moderate Democrats. “It’s a huge problem.”
It’s part of a barrage of evidence that the progressive activism of the Squad pushed the party’s image way left of where most voters are — even most Democratic voters.
This is a seismic shift from just a year ago. The signs have built steadily throughout President Biden’s 13 months in office that Squad politics are problematic when you control everything:
– 30 House Democrats— the most in decades — have announced they’ll retire instead of running in November’s midterms. They see little hope of keeping the majority in this environment.
– Democrats lose poll after poll of generic House matchups, which ask voters if they’d prefer an R or a D if the election were held today.
– Republicans’ decisive sweep of statewide offices in Virginia was powered in part by Democrats’ failure to appreciate parents’ skepticism about public schools’ mask mandates, policies on transgender rights and approach to teaching about race.
– Also in November, voters in liberal Minneapolis rejected a proposal designed to radically constrain police.
Zoom out: House Democrats’ own polling and focus groups show many swing voters think the party is too “preachy,” “judgmental” and “focused on culture wars,” according to documents obtained by Politico.
Think about what you just read. The far left politics of the squad, followed by the party is hurting it now and could be a disaster in November. If any reader of this blog is surprised by that, I would be surprised. They let it happen and deserve what should happen.
Not much coverage, but did you see that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy endorsed Harriet Hageman, the Republican challenger to Rep. Liz Cheney? She is a former member of his leadership team, as you may recall. The number three Republican in the House in fact.
Cheney has burned her Republican bridges and Wyoming will have to decide her future. The Democrats would never take the daughter of Darth Vader (ex VP Cheney). Other than a hatred for Donald Trump they have nothing in common. She could have survived the impeachment vote, but she added layers on top of that.
She says she voted her conscience. Okay, great. Now your party is voting their conscience. Why the criticism? What makes your conscience better?
The Ukraine attack is on or off depending on the hour and person speaking. One positive thing from this mess. Vladimir Putin’s reputation has been destroyed. If he attacks he is bringing the world closer to war than at any point since Hitler did the same to neighbors. If he holds off on invading Ukraine, he has established himself among the most dangerous, unstable and unreliable in the world. He has lost any respect he may have had and can never get it back. All of which leaves me shaking my head over our allies energy polices. Why do they want to support his economy?
We’ll leave you this week with this poll chart of the President’s approval and disapproval in all fifty states.
