Editors Note: With two days to go to the one year anniversary of Donald Trump taking the oath let’s do a review. Today we do part one of two.
The First Year — Part One.
It seems to us you have to divide his presidency into two parts. The personal one and the policy one. We see a marked contrast in both and not far different from the predictions of this column a year ago. Let’s take a look.
Side One: The Personal Side
The negative is his wreckless tweeting, endless ego that doesn’t allow for criticism and relentless desire to be told he is doing great and is brilliant.
That character flaw has opened the door to media mocking, competitor attacks knowing they will get a reaction and provoking actions by many that easily draw him in. The political instinct that seemed to help him so much in the election is just not evident in his performance. He takes positives and tweets something that turns the story negative. He will do something that is gathering praise and in answering a question totally turn the narrative.
He came with enemies, made many more with his words and actions and then fed them red meat to beat hm with.
He is not loyal to his people and doesn’t gather loyalty back. No President in recent memory had the combination of a united opposition party against him, and his own party so unsupportive in return. Some of his worst critics have been in his own party. He attacks them, they fight back and thus you can count his loyal friends easily. Try naming them. Who is so loyal they will go down with the President. How many can you get?
Another reason is his constant “I”. His ego forces him to take credit for everything he does. Never is it “them”. He just doesn’t credit others and that trait leads to less loyalty. A mark of great leadership is giving others credit, even for what you do. The opposite of Trump to date.
Think about that in this sense. He was in a media war way back in the primaries. They attack him daily (yesterday’s media report was that 85% of year one coverage was negative, only 5% positive and the reminder just balanced). There are no loyalists to argue his side with vehemence and passion. Remember when we warned “don’t get into a media war with companies that have unlimited ink”? He has and it isn’t working out.
So part one of our review — the personal side — is clear. It has failed, and that failure fed all those who were so against him and led in part to the chaos in the media today. It’s a shame.
Tomorrow we will present Part Two – The Policies of Year One.
